It is widely considered that her wedding day is the most important day of the bride’s life, the day that she dreamed about ever since reading all the fairytales. Those joyful last words of Cinderella come to mind: ‘And they lived happily ever after’.
It is also well-known that the time leading up to the big day is the most stressful of her life. The poor girl needs to decide on colour schemes, shoes, flowers, venue, music, catering, guests, the bridal party AND the key factor of a wedding: her dress. Her dress needs to be THE dress. It must be what everyone talks about when they see the photos and it should complement how utterly divine she looks.
At Posh Studio, we know what the stakes are, and we want to help keep the blood pressure levels down, the faces still smiling and the dream of a fairytale wedding alive. So, particularly for those having their dress made, here are a few tips to ensure the bride-to-be has a wonderful day!
Firstly, order your wedding dress at least 6 months before the big day. If, in order to get exactly what you want, you are having the dress made, that 6 months will be imperative for the dressmaker and for you. It allows plenty of time for choice of style, and fitting and tailoring. Admittedly, you may fret over whether it will fit you after you ate all that delicious cake at the engagement party; but once the dress is ready, and you try it on for the first time, you spend another few weeks ooohing and aaahing over its beauty. Of course, some alterations may be necessary, and you will be mentally thanking yourself for ordering it 6 months in advance, allowing time for the small changes.
Bridesmaid and flower girl dresses need not be ordered quite so long ahead, 3-4 months ought to be enough. Again allowing for little alterations on the finished product, these few months might save your life – and the bride won’t feel quite so tense.
Ordering the dress in advance means you need to have all the measurements ready. Fortunately, Posh Studio has How-To-Measure instructions on our website, which is a helpful guide for those who aren’t quite sure which measurements are necessary. These directions are also very handy for bridesmaids coming in from overseas – Posh Studio has made it easier for you, and you can give your measurements without having to be there! The guide will ensure that you have the correct measurements for every unique body shape and style of dress. For pregnant gals, it is best to make wide estimates, and then alter it down closer to the date; that way, you won’t get any nasty surprises.

When calculating your measurements, remember: never guess your size; plan for alterations; wear your chosen underwear and shoes for the big day to get accurate results, and measure very carefully before purchasing – in fact, always have someone else do the measuring for you. We want you to be delighted with the finished product!
Accessorising your wedding gown is important to consider. Should you do it? It really depends on the dress and, obviously, you: whether you want to go for simple grace, or stylishly adorned chic. Whatever you choose, make sure to sort it out soon after your first fitting; and that goes for shoes, veil (if you want one) and lingerie. While the wedding dress is crucially significant, these other details aren’t minor either, as they need to harmonize the dress and you in it. Plus, the bride and her supporting ladies won’t want the added stress of trying to find the right pair of shoes or prettiest earrings a month before the wedding! So figure out all the details as soon as you can.
And finally, arrange the final fitting for approximately 3-4 weeks before the wedding. You will want to look in the mirror and remind yourself that all the hectic preparations have been worth it: you look amazing.
Hopefully these tips have been valuable for the bride-to-be, and may she live happily ever after, just like the fairytales said.

Ball season is coming up, which means hitting the tanning bars, treating yourself to a mani-pedi, and practising hairstyles with your GHDs – and, (dare I say ‘most’?) importantly, the stressful task of finding the perfect ball dress!
Some might disagree with me. Perhaps the shoe shopping is more significant? But I find that once you’ve found the dress, discovering the complementing shoes is a breeze. So, here’s a tip for your ball: get the dress first. The rest will follow promptly.
The great thing about our day and age is that we have so many different styles of dress to choose from! This is wonderful because there are various styles of personality as well, and each girl has their own vision of how they want to look at the high school dance. You could go all out with a sleek, figure-hugging gown that flares out at your thighs and falls to your toes; you might even want a train (albeit a small one – we aren’t off to the Oscars girls!) Maybe you would prefer a mini dress in the boldest colour out, or a simple halter-neck number that ends just above your knees, displaying those elegant shoulders and gorgeous calves!
There are Gothic dresses for those who want to go to the ball strikingly draped in black lace and wearing pointy-toed boots. You could make like Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in a light frock made with layers of floating fabric; or maybe you just love to make a statement, and will arrive in a floor-length gown with a tight bodice and a poofy, shimmering skirt adorned with exquisite embroidery (*sigh*). My point: there is a dress somewhere with your name on it, just waiting for you to snatch it up and wear it beautifully!
Now, I know that as much as we would like it to not matter, the opinions of our peers are always at the back of our minds when shopping for the dress. At some schools, it’s considered seriously uncool for girls younger than year 13 to dress in red-carpet fashion for the ball, decked in bright colours and long skirts. Sequins and tulle? No way! And it is social suicide to turn up in the same dress as your friend (actually, that rings true for almost anything). But, really, it shouldn’t matter. Wear what you want to the ball. If you look good, then how can anyone dispute that?

Whether it’s the long-sleeved and long-awaited Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen on Kate Middleton in late April last year, a vintage masterpiece from the twentieth century, or maybe a simple, custom-made design – lace wedding gowns are a timeless beauty! And here in 2012, because lace is in high demand right now, there are several options for varied people and their style.
First of all, lace: you have quite a few types of lace. There’s the inexpensive Chantilly lace, often adorned with flowers and ribbon. Then there is the ever-popular Alençon, a sort of embroidered Chantilly lace. Lace can come from Venice, Spain or Belgium, and the Guipure is a French bobbin lace. There is lace that is hard to say, like Schiffli, and kinds of lace that seem much too difficult, like cutwork (where parts of the fabric are cut away to create a delicate, lacy pattern).
Whatever the nature of it, lace has been prevalent in weddings since before the Victorian era, where it became an institution. It is a textile technique, made by weaving and braiding a pattern, using fibres such as cotton, silk, polyester, nylon or wool, and can be made by hand or machine. Appreciated for the delicacy in detail and beautifully complex patterns, lace became a lasting bridal adornment in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and has continued on to this day. Lace wedding gowns are still valued for their artistic quality and attention to detail; if it be knitted, crocheted or created by needle or machine, marrying in lace can bring a little tradition to an otherwise contemporary wedding and add a touch of elegance and grace to the bride.
Givenchy knows it, the Duchess of Cambridge knows it, EVERYONE should know it: lace is a classic embellishment to wedding gowns, and a must-have!

Yes, bridemaid dresses have a lot to do with setting the colour theme of the wedding.
A lot of brides have asked me how to pick the right colour for bridesmaid dresses. Well, it’s hard to give one answer that fits all. Some colours are going to be popular every year such as dark red, royal blue, black, charcoal, midnight blue, etc.
Here are a few things for your reference if you don’t have a specific colour in mind:
* Consider colour options according to different seasons of the year
Spring – baby pink/ light green/sage green / soft yellow / lalic / forest green
Summer - blue (sky blue, baby blue, royal blue) / turquoise /coral / fushia pink /
Autumn – gold / choclate / dark brown / burgundy / purple / latte / champagne / burnt orange
Winter – blue (royal blue, midnight blue) / dark red / silver / dark puple / grey / charcoal
However, there is no rule as such when it comes to colour, it’s a very personal choice so feel free to go with what looks good to you and to your bridesmaids.
* The other good way to keep up with the colour trend is to get ideas from magazines and watch out for celebrity weddings, they have the highest paid designers to help.
* Mix colours – be brave, and have fun, but also be VERY careful

Ok ladies, now you’ve got a special event to go to and want to posh up for it.
A lot of ladies asked me if they should buy the dress or hire it as our hiring prices are normally half of the buying prices.
I would normally ask: would you wear it again to another function in the next 6 months? If you get at least 2 wears out of it then it’s worth buying. It’s always good to have a formal dress in your wardrobe so that you are prepared if you get invited to an event / party unexpectedly. Sometimes it’s hard to find something you like and fits well when you are in a hurry.
However, a lot of the times, you might not want to wear the same dress again for all sort of reasons, perhaps because change of shape, taste, theme of the party/event, or perhaps your friends have all seen you in that dress already you just really want to wear something different.
So, the answer is, if the dress you are thinking of hiring is a dress that you can see yourself wear again easily in the next 6 months then buy it, otherwise you might just hire one and the money you save can get you another hired dress next time
As a general guide, our cooktail dresses (Simply Elegant range) are $200.00 each to buy, $100.00 to hire, full length gowns (A Touch of Class rang) are $270.00 each to buy, $135.00 to hire (alteration costs are extra).
Oh well, at least you’ve got options! Please don’t leave it till last minute and hoping you can just go to the mall to buy a dress that you really like, in the right colour, within your budge, and fits perfectly :)

Yesterday one of my customers said she had a disaster with her evening gown that she was going to wear for a special event this Saturday evening.
The gown she purchased was too long, so she thought her mum could do the hemming for her as she has an overlocker and sewing machine at home and she knows basic sewing. Then she told her mum the dress is 5cm too long, so her mum hemmed the dress up exactly 5cm evenly. However, when she put it on after hemming, the back is too short for a full length gown!
She came to see me and asked what I can do about it. The option for her was either wear flat shoes then I could hem the rest of the dress level at the back, or re-hem the dress to a cocktail length. She decided to go for a cocktail length as she had bought very nice shoes to go with the dress, and it worked out very well. However, that was plan B:) She could have worn it for the night in full length, then hemmed it up later for a different look for another special occasion.
So I would like to share with you all, when doing hemming for dresses, the pinning must be done while the dress is on with heels, as some people have bigger bust while some have fuller bum and some have a very arched back. So when it comes to hemming, it doesn’t necessarily mean just evenly cut the length off! My suggestion is, it’s best to leave the alterations to the professionals

Today one of my customers said she wasn’t sure what colour her flower girl should wear, the same colour as her wedding dress, or the same colour as bridesmaid dresses?
Colour is a very personal choice, however, from experience, the following “rules” work well so I thought I’d share with her:
* If your flower girl is of a younger age, she can wear the same colour as your wedding dress and work in the bridesmaid dress colour by adding a sash at the waist, or a clip on flower or bow that is made of the same colour and fabric of bridesmaid dress, or even a hair piece.
* If your flower girl is in her teens (junior bridesmaid), she can wear the same colour as your bridesmaids and work the wedding dress colour in (white, ivory, etc).
And don’t make your flower girl wear something that is not suitable for her age
